But do plastic islands really exist?

Yes. The largest is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Japan and Hawaii.
It was crossed for the first time in 1997 during a regatta: it took 7 days to cross it.
We also have one in Italy, in the Tuscan archipelago, powered by waste transported by waterways.
